Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these drugs must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
