A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
